Sussex Book Arts at Phoenix Gallery Brighton

Had a great time yesterday at 'OFF THE PAGE - An Afternoon of Books' where we appeared in the Red Room at Phoenix.  We had a drop-in and were glad to see all the wonderful people who visited us.  Amy did really well with her imaginative and curious Invasion of Miniature Books - with one going off to New Zealand before long!  She's waiting for some hot photos to come back too.

Here's a few pics of us with Books in Action -

Wow - paper-normous activity - making a giant collaged zig zag book

Good fun was had by all.....   A good way to start off the month of June, and we had sunshine added.  Watch out for the interview that Phoenix did with us - some of the details are on their website.

CATCH up with us again on 2nd July at Ink Spot Press for all the latest in booky, papery things.

Press & Release Exhibition of Book Art

The Book Art Collective were delighted to have an opportunity of seeing the Book Art Exhibits last night at their meeting.  Although many of us had seen them before, there is so much to see in the show that it was great to have another look.  Jane, Carolina and Dorry gave us a talk each about their pieces of work and we had some discussion about making books, working collaboratively on book projects, the features of book arts that are special and much more ....

This is some us being treated to a lovely talk about book-y things last night.

After a good look round and many remarks of delight, we retired to do some practical things.  Suzanne provided us with some great resources and there was much folding, glue-ing, cutting and lots of other messy stuff which finished off the evening very well!

Our next meeting will be held at INK SPOT PRESS on Tuesday 21 May, 2013.  See you there!

Conceived by visual artist Kim L Pace, ‘Labyrinth of Darkness’ includes a diverse selection of films that juxtaposes contemporary international artists’ works, alongside examples from pioneering Czech animators. The aim is to bring to light common thematic concerns, narrative devices and techniques between the films, thereby facilitating a dialogue between past and present.

Bodily metaphors, which historically enabled numerous Czech animators to construct meaningful ambivalence and subvert authority within a rigorously controlled context, resonate throughout the contemporary works. Body parts are often objectified in the films – and perhaps point to the increasingly alienating technological environments in which many of us live and work.

Further exciting news!

Having already blogged that we are now going to meet on 21 May at the Phoenix Gallery, a further
surprise -

During the evening I have arranged for us to have a private viewing of the PRESS AND RELEASE 2013 Book Arts Show.

Not only is that great for us all to have a long look, the evening will be mainly given over to the tour so that we can have some discussion about the pieces of work on show, and talk about what interests us the most, as well as perhaps getting some further inspiration for our own work.

So, thanks go to the Phoenix for this fab opportunity.   And, all you book artists out there - be there - and join in the fun!

At the last meeting, Suzanne kindly offered to bring some of her multitude of papers, cutouts, stamps, images etc etc for us to have a practical session too.  So, there will be plenty to keep us all occupied on the 21st May.  Book it in your diary now so you don't forget.

And whilst on the subject of BookS - Anyone like OLDER books?  Here are some pages from a handwritten and drawn book dating back to the 1800s.  I love the map of Matrimony.   Enjoy!  (and thanks Helen for allowing the photos)

The first meeting!

Last Thursday (28th March), we met at Ink Spot Press to launch the Sussex Book Art Collective....

Dorry Smallman presented some ideas for the possible shape of the group, and we all chipped in about what might happen and things we'd like to do in coming meetings.

We agree to share projects, knowledge and ideas - what we're up to, as well as work on commonly themed ones...
The first project is to create a piece of work or book around the idea of 'teaching someone to be us for the day'. It could be images, text, whatever you choose.

Then Sarah Bryant showed us her beautifully crafted books - a real treat, as they are not only precision made but also fascinating in content.

We followed a demo by Sarah and printed a small piece of text each

Thanks to Dorry for kicking off an exciting group, and to Sarah for sharing her work and skills...

Books are part of my practice which also includes drawing, film and installation.
